Lara Fraser is a DJ, producer and radio host. She has built up her position as one of Australia’s leading DJs through being half of the internationally recognised duo ‘The Lallas‘ (with fellow DJ and Game of Thrones’ actress Laura Pradelska). They are DJ regulars at Fashion Week, Cannes Film Fest and Grand Prix’s. Lara and Laura currently host a radio show on Boogaloo Radio having previously been at Hoxton Radio.( known to bring the best vibes to any party). We at the UFO Network had the opportunity of interviewing Lara Fraser and this is what she had to say…

  • Hi Lara how are you doing? So… Fashion and Music is what you do! Tell us a bit about how you got into both industries and how you built up your position as one of Australia’s leading DJs.

Hey guys, I’m doing really well thanks! I find fashion, music and art all go hand in hand. I’ve always had a passion for music, growing up I learnt violin, piano and saxophone so I’d say it’s in my blood.  However, falling into DJing was by complete chance.  At the time I was hosting a radio show with Laura Pradelska (Actress Game of Thrones) and we got offered a DJ gig to open London Fashion Week which we saw as an opportunity and decided to go all in and learn how to DJ. From there we learnt on the job, signed with The Books Agency and The Lallas were born. Whilst we DJ together we both have our separate other jobs. I became enthralled in music production, the creation of sounds, beats and eventually songs that have the power to move people and make statements. I’ve been lucky enough to learn these processes from amazing musicians, spending my free time in different studios and absorbing everything I can.

I’m also a London ambassador and DJ for Fashion for Conservation which focuses on making sustainable fashion accessible and desirable – with the goal of preserving our earths precious resources. I recently went out to their headquarters, an eco-lodge called Hoja Nueva in the Peruvian Amazon with another singer I am currently working on an EP with Elle L and begun linking our music with the important messages of the organisation.

  • Tell us more about your release ‘Animal with Art Bastian? We recently featured this on our Network and absolutely LOVE the track!

Art Bastian is an incredibly talented producer and a dream to work with. I was brought on half way through the track as a link from my manager and we instantly vibed musically and personally. He has some great new tracks coming up as well that I am super excited for (I’m sure he’ll be happy to tell you guys all about them).

We actually shot the video for ‘Animal’ twice as we changed concepts. We wanted the video to really link with the message of female empowerment we were trying to portray. The camera is being dragged around by a chain, which acknowledges and subverts the male gaze on the traditionally provocative scenes we created. We worked with a bunch of gorgeous talented ladies who embodied this the strong self-assured message. They also ate fire which was pretty impressive!

  • What single night out has been the most memorable for you as a DJ, Producer and radio Host?

Wow, that is a hard one. I must say as I’ve lived in so many different countries it’s safe to say I’ve had a fair few nights out! DJing at the Monaco Grand Prix was amazing (even though that is a little more day time), watching Earth, Wind & Fire perform for a tiny audience at Scotch was pretty special as well.

  • What do you have coming up?

I’m super excited to be doing the official remix of Mr Eazi & Efya “Mamee’ track that should be coming out very soon!

I am also currently working a body of work with an amazing and beautiful singer Elle L. We are currently in the studio finding a whole new sound together (our collab EP ) the visuals of which have been filmed in the Peruvian Amazon.

  • What do you do to unwind when out of the studio? Any hobbies or favourite places to visit?

I’m a little nerdy, I love reading and anything outdoors. Give me a beach, ocean to swim in and some nature to explore and I’m in my happy place. My favourite places to visit in the world are Cambodia, Lima, Bali, Ibiza, Mykonos and the list goes on…. I love travelling. Seeing different cultures and experiencing life from different perspectives is inspirational for work and myself as a person.

  • Besides yourself, who are we to keep an eye on in the Australian dance scene right now?

Australia has a lot more going on these days, DJ Tigerlily is great, of course Flume, Sia, tyDi, Timmy Trumpet… there’s loads of range. Also, we have a great festival scene out there!

  • Who would your dream collab be with and why?

It’d be Etta Bond, she has a voice you can get lost in that can be taken to so many different places and genres – it’s dreamy.

  • How do you get a track started? Tell us a bit about your production process. How long does it take you to complete a track on average, and do you ever get writer’s block?

It differs depending on who I’m working with, sometimes the singer will send snippets of vocals or a chorus that’s running through their head and we’ll make the beat around that other times it’s vice versa, but it’s always a collaborative process brought together in the studio. You can go in with a clear idea in your head and feed off other people in the rooms energies elevating the track into something completely new.

  • When did you decide that you wanted to be a creative? Can you remember that exact moment?

I’ve always been pretty creative, especially in my excuses not to be in an office! It’s hard though, there are massive ups and downs in these industries, sometimes you have so much work you don’t know what to do with yourself and then you’ll hit a dry spell which will have you thinking a 9-5 sounds pretty good. For me though, it’s about creating, the main thing is staying motivated and seeing things where other people wouldn’t.

  • Fan question – What is you spirit animal and why?

My spirit animal is definitely a monkey! A little cheeky, always curious with an eye on the prize.
