From one-to-watch to leader of the pack, Julian Jordan’s rapid ascent through the dance music world has been something to behold. It’s no surprise given the fresh quality of his productions, which always surprise and delight in equal measures. Not beholden to tired formulas or following the latest trend, he instead paves his own way with innovative rhythms, atypical riffs and endlessly inventive production.

His advice to aspiring producers is simple: be yourself: “Always try to create the music you want to create and don’t care too much about what other people say about your music. If it’s something that you are proud of that’s the only thing that matters, because you created it.” These wise words have served him very well indeed.

Tell us about that first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since. How did you get started?

The first track I ever made was rock steady and that one got noticed by an a&r from Spinnin records. I released it there and it became a HUGE success! I was the youngest dj on Spinnin Records with just 15 years old haha. It became a big thing in the EDM scene.

Tell us about your previous track ‘To the Wire’ on STMPD RCRDS?

I’m so happy with that track! The sessions were so much fun and we had great fun recording everything. From live guitars to vocals and chords

What single night out has been the most memorable for you as a DJ and producer?

I remember going to my first festival. It was a free all age festival and I got to see Dj ‘billy the kit’ a big Dj in The Netherlands. I was so impressed by how he played and brought the energy to the crowd. I was a bit jealous and wanted to do that as well haha. I think I was around 14 that time.

Tell us something we wouldn’t normally find out about you.

That I love art, I used to collect sneakers and also did bmx’ing and drumming!

Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?

Bruce Hornsby – the way it is

What tours / residencies / upcoming events do you have in the pipeline that we mustn’t miss out on?

So many sick festivals coming up and amazing club shows all around the world. I’m on my way to Mysteryland right now and I have to go to Asia next week

Does your Dutch heritage have any influence on your EDM production style?

Maybe, I got inspired by Dutch DJ’s and sounds from back in the day. Also, I saw Tiesto play on live tv and I was sold!

How do you get a track started? Tell us a bit about your production process. How long does it take you to complete a track on average, do you ever get writer’s block and who has been your favourite co-lab?

I normally just go with the flow and when I get inspired, I just start producing. It could be at the most random moment, for example when I’m on my bike or when I’m in the plane. I have my entire phone full witch voice memo’s of me singing melodies. My favourite collab has to be the one with Sander van Doorn called ‘kangaroo’. It was my first number 1 and did so good for my career

Latest track / EP? What are you working on currently? Tell us more!

New club music, collabs with DJ’s, singers and songwriters. I think I’m already fully planned until next summer! So, enough music ready for you guys!

Fan question – “The relationship between the audience and the DJ is crucial, and yet it seems to be a fragile one – how do you see the balance between giving the crowd what they want and treating them to something new?”

Sometimes the audience doesn’t know they want a new song until they’ve heard it a few times. The audience always wants to listen to tracks they know, but also get introduced to new things. So, you have to find the perfect balance.
