All things considered, it’s been a pretty incredible twelve months for Ryan Murgatroyd and the Swoon Recordings crew. Established in June 2019 as an outlet to champion South African talent and push the boundaries of traditional club music with its deep and soulful sonic leanings, Swoon has since forged itself a remarkable reputation as one of the most exciting, forward-thinking labels on the electronic music circuit.
With a truly impressive catalogue of critically-acclaimed, internationally-lauded releases from some of South Africa’s brightest talents clocked in just one year, the nascent imprint now celebrates its first birthday in typical Swoon style, with a stunning new two-part EP courtesy of label boss Murgatroyd, singer Sobantwana and fellow countrymen Zaloz. Introducing Wooma…

The second part of the package sees Ryan flex his A&R muscles once again, as he welcomes South African brothers Zaloz for their exquisite debut offering on Swoon. INTERVIEW WITH RYAN MURGATROYD
- In the 3 years working on Wooma, what was the point where you said, “alright, we’re done now, we can release it”?
I think the file name was “Wooma final edit 2020 final forever edit 22 – last changes – update 9”. But I knew it would click into place and it did.
Also I had people threatening to end me if I opened it up again and changed anything.
- What’s the story behind the title “Wooma”?
Well it comes from the word Vuma which means “allow”, Olwethu has such a great story about the origin of it so I’ll leave her to tell it..
- How did the three continents you experienced while working on the record influence it?
I worked on the riff first in South Africa, then I was in Asia for a few weeks where life couldn’t possibly be more different. So that gave me a real sense of how unique Wooma is, the whole sonic palette, when you consider what people listen to in different places in the world. So to fuse african and electronic music is a whole new ball game. And then I played it out and almost finished it out while on tour in Europe which was great because I could test it out in a bunch of different environments, including a bullring in Spain, some underground Berlin clubs and even Fusion fest on the Sonneddeck stage.
- Given the name of your label, “Swoon”, what would you like people to feel when listening to this new record?
I think Olwethu (Sobantwana) left a bit of special medicine in this record and so did I. It’s a healing record for me, it’s about hope, it’s about renewal.. and it’s about getting doooown!
