Exclusive Interview with American DJ / Producer – Moonbow
Tell us about the first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since. How did you get started?
Asleep Tonight is my debut track, I worked on it for a countless amount of time before I felt it was ready to be released to the public. The responses I have been getting about my debut song have been amazing and really made the countless hours worth it. I have always loved electronic music, and love making people happy so I put the two together and decided to make music that can change a person’s emotions for a given time.
Tell us about your latest project ‘Asleep Tonight’ Feat. Kopri
My latest project called Asleep Tonight is a song that can have a few different meanings depending on the listener, the lyrics symbolize that feeling of aloneness and the feeling of someone leaving you, whether that’s emotionally or physically. When listening to the song, it can really pull on your heartstrings – that’s what I was going for.
Tell us something we wouldn’t normally find out about you?
My first attempt at making music was when I was four in my basement with my older brother and his friend, we were called “The Rubber Band Heads” – we made music about our cats and we broke up later that week unfortunately.
What single night out has been most memorable for you as a dj and producer?
My first time ever performing in front of a crowd. It was New Years Eve at The Rave in Milwaukee, Seven Lions were performing that night. My best friend and I absolutely killed a side-stage performance and was one of the best nights of my life.
Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?
Light – San Holo, it has always been a favorite of mine and it’s actually playing right now.
Dream collaboration and why?
I would love to work with San Holo, he has influenced my music and life so much. His brand and energy have always fueled everything I do. Along with learning to always try to stay vibrant. +%
If you could play any festival, which would it be?
Locally, I have always dreamed of playing Summerfest in Milwaukee. But, I would love to play at Coachella and drop some vibes.
How do you get a track started? tell us about your production process
When making a new track I usually watch a live set of someone I look up to (San Holo, ILLENIUM etc.) and I imagine if they added a new song in their set what would it sound like? I then open up my mac and experiment with different sounds, packs etc. and try to make something unique but recognizable at the same time. It usually takes me a day or two to get the track fully laid out, but the post production is what I take my time on. It takes me about two to three weeks to have a solid track that I am in love with. When making music I am extremely picky so I always give myself time to listen then re-listen to see if I really am in love with what I just made.
Latest project? What are you currently working on?
My next single titled “Wait” will be out in the coming weeks. It’s a melodic dubstep track and is heavily inspired by Seven Lions and Awakend
The relationship between a dj and the audience is crucial, and yet is seems to be a fragile one – how do you see the balance between giving the crowd what they want and treating them to something new?
Whenever I perform, I always imagine myself in the crowd. What would I want to hear? Doing this along with matching the vibe of the crowd can really transform a good set into a beautiful set. I never want to put on just a show, I want it to be an experience and introducing the crowd to new things is always a must.
