Fast rising London based alt-pop musician / animator Psyrena (Madeleine Wise) ropes in Swedish electro house producer Jon Born for a bouncy, club oriented remix for new track ‘Jedi Master’ lifted from her forthcoming EP ‘Quarantella Rockefella’ due later this year.

Jon Born says: “Having done the Rainbows and Unicorns Remix for Psyrena, I was thrilled when they approached me again to make a different version of Jedi Master. What inspired me to go for an electronic, clubby version combined with 80s flair was ultimately her nonchalant vocals in the verse with the added vocoder.”
Mixed and mastered by Yak Bondy (John Digweed, Timo Maas, Hex Hector), ‘Jedi Master’ is a powerful 8-bit electronica synth-fest with a much deeper message. Psyrena says: “It all started with this synth melody, which I wanted to find words to. Then rewatching Star Wars during lockdown, I was inspired by the wisdom of Yoda and somehow I ended up finding a proverb by Xún Zi, a Confucian philosopher. Two Chinese friends read this out to me and it fit the melody to a T – as if it was meant to be – that’s how ‘Jedi Master’ was born.”
She goes on to add: “Just like ‘Rainbows and Unicorns’ I made the music video for ‘Jedi Master’ at home. The pandemic is bringing the importance of digitalisation to the fore, I am wondering what changes the aftermath may bring, in terms of how we communicate with each other, or how we function. Hence I found it very interesting experimenting with bending reality with digital AI masks, producing post-human aesthetics, altering myself, or appearing with Mr. Bear in an old-school computer game during the video making process. It felt like being in The Matrix. Especially now, with social media, there’s so much focus on curating our own identities. I didn’t realise it, but we are so connected to the technology we are almost fusing with it. It gives us a very strong feeling of control over our own image, which is exciting and scary at the same time, but as an artist and musician I see my role to package the complex into something palatable, so Jedi Master just had be uplifting and fun. In the video, I am becoming a cyber-human so to speak, but I take and take control. Let’s not be afraid of the future, learn about it, help others learn too. We can do both, be close to each other in lockdown and have fun with annoying robots.”
Psyrena is no stranger to international cultures. Her own tri-lingual upbringing has led to recording her festive EP “Psyrena’s Christmas” (2018) featuring seven traditional songs sung in seven different languages. 2019 saw the release of her “Fallen Angel” EP, showing a darker side & inspiring critical acclaim by journalists and fellow artists.
Being a multi-instrumentalist herself, her writing and production work has already been featured on [adult swim] and Cartoon Network. Together with her creative partner Yak Bondy and Ivor Novello composer Hélène Muddiman she co-wrote and performed music for the Original Motion Picture ‘Bliss!’ (2016), conducted by Eimear Noone, the first ever female orchestra leader performing at the Oscars in 2020.
