Sam – firstly, big thanks to you for taking time out of your super busy schedule to chat to us! We at UFO and our followers are too keen to hear what’s been happening in your life, how it all started and what you have coming up!
Tell us about that first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since.
The track that really put me on the map in the electronic dance scene is definitely my rework of Robin S’ ‘Show Me Love’. The original meant so much to me and to breakthrough in so many countries with my version of this song made it extra special. I remember listening to the original when I was very young, and it made such a huge impact on me. It was pretty much one of the first dance tracks I came into contact with. With my version of ‘Show Me Love’ I gained a lot of momentum and things started to snowball and resulted in a lot of new international bookings. From that moment on my international DJ career really started to take off. When I look back now, I can’t hardly believe how fast everything went and how many incredible memories I’ve collected so far. Looking at the things we got on the horizon, I can’t wait on the journey that’s ahead. Especially with the addition of the live band, we’ve got some amazing things coming up.
“Know you Better” has hit 5 million streams on Spotify and “Where’s my Love” is on track to do even better – well done! What was it like collaborating firstly with Tessa and more recently with SYML?
With both these incredible artists, I knew right away I wanted to work with them the first time I heard them sing. Tessa is a very talented singer from Norway, that I discovered through Spotify. After hearing her voice, I immediately reached out so see if she was interested in working with me. Together with fellow Dutch producer LVNDSCAPE we ended up creating ‘Know You Better’, with Tessa on the vocals; perfectly matching the feel of the song with her incredible sound. More recently, I worked together with Brain Fennell, better known as SYML on our collaboration: Where’s My Love.
The original version, that SYML released in 2016, caught my attention from the get go. I loved the song right away and it didn’t take long before I reached out to him, to see if he was up for giving this incredible track a new spin. Our styles are quite different but blending them together made it extra special in my opinion. Brian was very open and loved the thought of doing this new version of the song together. I think it worked out perfectly and we’re both very happy with the end result and also the feedback where getting , now the song is released.

You are busy on the Sunrise Tour 2018 – What single night has been the most memorable for you?
Choosing one show out of so many is too hard, haha! Every show has been memorable in its own way!
You have band members and live instrument supporting you for your Sunrise Tour, that’s pretty extraordinary considering most DJ/Producers just travel with a USB stick! Tell us about the pros and cons of working with live members and instruments.
A lot of my music incorporates live instruments, to help complement this mostly electronic oriented genre. I worked a lot with my band members during the process of my debut album: From Sunrise to Sunset, that was released at the end of 2017. For me it felt as the logical next step to add these live instruments to my shows to deliver an even more immersive experience for the listener and these instruments create so much more energy once they are played live, it’s awesome. Of course, we had to look into ways how to incorporate it all in the show and make it all work in the best way possible. We experimented a lot and I think we now have a good idea, how to best perform on stage together.
The shows we did so far, were incredible and the amount of positive feedback we’ve got has been enormous. We have a lot of live shows coming up and I’m very much looking forward to bring this new experience to the fans around the world. One of the highlights this year will probably be our show at the mainstage of Tomorrowland. Next to this festival you can also catch us at: Parookaville, Mysteryland, Nature One, Sziget, South West Four, Mysteryland, just to name a few. In the meantime, I’ll also be doing a couple of shows stateside with the addition of more Heartfeldt Pool Parties, and let’s not forget Sensation Bangkok and Ushuaïa Ibiza, both with the live band.
You are on a big drive to educate the world about sustainability, and are practicing this in your own life by driving a hybrid car and becoming an ambassador for Greenseat. Please tell us about this initiative, why you got involved and in your opinion, what things the average person can do in their everyday lives to make a difference?
As human beings we have to look at our own actions and take responsibility for the impact we have on our environment. Over the last couple of years, it became even more apparent for me that we need to take action into our own hands and do what we can to create a better place for all of us.
As a worldwide touring DJ, taking more than 200 flights per year, air travel was one of the most important things for me to address. That’s why I decided to offset all my CO2 emissions and pollution caused by flights, by investing and participating in sustainable energy projects around the world, together with Greenseat, – making my air travel carbon neutral. This helps local communities, the environment and hopefully at the same time create more awareness on what people can do themselves to create a better world. It all starts with looking at your own actions and make conscious decisions that will lead to changes in your daily routines. With some small adjustments you can already have a very positive impact. For starters people can stop using those plastic straws or drinking cups or offset their own carbon footprint through the help of organizations such as Greenseat, but it the end, it all starts with looking at your own behavior.
Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?
Show Me Love 🙂
(One of our favorites too 😉 )
You have a lot of upcoming gigs (see below for details) – what gig are you most looking forward to and why?
To be honest, this festival season is already coming together nicely. But with so many shows on the horizon it’s hard to pick one, but I think doing the mainstage together with the live band at Tomorrowland will definitely be one of the highlights of this Summer. To perform with the band is such an amazing experience and to be able to do that this year on so many festivals, is like a dream come true. You have to see it for yourself.
Tell us about Heartfeldt Poolparties (cool name!) – was this your concept? How did it come about?
The idea of hosting my own pool party started a long time ago. The first edition was held in 2016 during ADE in October. As you can imagine, the weather in Amsterdam can be pretty cold around that time of year, so I decided to bring some summer vibes to ADE by throwing an indoor poolparty that represents Sam Feldt music and it’s tropical feel. It turned out to be a huge success and created a lot of attention around Amsterdam Dance Event, amongst all the other big parties that were held during that week. It didn’t take long for the concept to go stateside, where we did several sold-out editions during Miami Music Week. This year we turned it up a notch and are now hosting more poolparties than ever before. These parties are so much fun, you really have to experience it for yourself.
How do you get a track started? Tell us a bit about your production process. How long does it take you to complete a track on average, do you ever get writer’s block and who has been your favourite collaboration?
Each time is different, sometimes I work on a melody that I recorded while humming something into my telephone, other times I start with a simple beat or a vocal that inspires me. When doing remixes, I look at the part that resonates with me the most, strip down the rest of the track and start from there. When I experience writer’s block, I try to get away from the process of making music. You will notice your brain comes up with solutions when you least expect it. Sometimes it just clicks, while your away from your studio doing groceries or something and all of a sudden you know what the track is missing that you were working on. Choosing a favorite collab is impossible – every collaboration I’ve done has been special in its own way.
You have A LOT going on in your life – how do you unwind and relax?
I try to stay focused on the things that matter the most in live and that’s of course friends and family. I try to spend as much time as possible with the ones I love, when I’m not touring or if I can’t bring them with me. I love spending time with my girlfriend and my family and let’s not forget my friends, with whom I often chill and play video games with like everyone else. When I’m on tour I like to stay fit as much as possible by trying to get enough sleep and workout as often as I can. This helps me to stay focused, full of energy and in good spirit.
You are a pretty multi-talented guy – next to being a DJ/Producer, you are also the founder of Fangage, a platform that focuses on building your own website and turning it into a social destination where you can connect with your fans on a deeper level, accelerating your business or brand. How did this come about?
Around two years ago, I was looking at my social media and I saw that I almost had 1 million fans combined over all platforms. I had, however, no idea who these people were or how I could reach them directly. The only option I had was paying large amounts of money to Facebook and Instagram in order to show my music to the people that already wanted to hear from me. For me, this was bizarre and kind of an eye opener. It was at that moment that I decided I had to create an independent platform for my fans where they could access all my content and where I could get personally in touch with them. After launching Heartfeldt.me, many other DJ’s followed and launched their Fangage portal – which proves to me that we are doing something right!
Fan question – “You are playing at Tomorrowland 2018: what’s the one song in your set you plan to make the crowd lose their minds with?”
