We chatted to Zimmer, Check it out!

  • 1. Tell us about that first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since.
My very first song was called Cruisin’, a slow mo disco jam released in 2011. It’s been a steady growth ever since, playing more and more gigs as a DJ, starting to travel all around the globe, releasing more and more music. Every step was a slight step up and that took me from playing warms up in small Paris clubs to touring in Asia, America and playing at Coachella. All while learning how to become a better producer (Cruisin’ was the second track I ever produced).
  • 2. Latest track / EP? What are you working on currently? Give us the inside scoop on what you are doing right now!
Latest track was Landing out this summer. I’m working on a ton of new music. There’s another single out soon and a lot more after that.
  • 3. What single night out has been the most memorable for you as a DJ and Producer?
I remember playing Glasslands in Brooklyn in 2014. It was one of those magical gigs were track after track the crowd was more into it. When I finally played my own music it was an explosion. Sweat was dripping from the ceiling and everyone ended up being on stage with me. It was a very happy moment.
  • 4. Your latest single “Landing” was motivated by your father’s research and work toward the recent discovery of gravitational waves – please tell us laymen more about this, it sounds super interesting!
Basically I made the track in one afternoon, and I felt really emotional after it. I realized afterwards that it was the same emotions that I felt when my dad told me they had discovered gravitational waves, something he had been working towards for 30 years.
  • 5. Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?
Chic – Everybody Dance
  • 6. What tours / residencies / upcoming events do you have in the pipeline that you are super excited about?
I’m touring the US and Canada with a live show for the first time this fall ! It will be my first timing playing live, and we’re currently working on a special light installation to go along the music.
  • 7. Anyone new in the Parisian EDM scene that we should be keeping an eye on in your opinion?
He’s not really electronic but I like what Voyou is doing. Really good french indie pop.
  • 8. How do you get a track started? Tell us a bit about your production process. How long does it take you to complete a track on average and do you ever get writer’s block?
It can be anything, I just play around with chords and beats and see what comes out. If I’m in a zone, a track can be pretty advanced in a couple hours. I do definitely get long periods where I don’t feel like writing music, or I’m just not inspired. I try to then do other things and get back to it later. No need to force anything.
  • 9. You grew up in Paris and California, two of the cultural hubs of the world – how did this influence your style of producing?
I didn’t directly influence my production, but it made me like different things. I’m a pretty eclectic person, and in my music it translates with influences going from Indie Pop to Techno. You can definitely hear that in my music.
  • 10. Fan question – “Who would be your ultimate collab and why?”
Kevin Parker / Tame Impala. He’s an amazing singer and musician.

Of the video Zimmer says, “In 2015, scientists detect Gravitational Waves for the first time. My father was one of them. This is the story of 30 years of research, the discovery of a lifetime. I’ve been profoundly moved by the discovery and Landing is an homage track to my father. Gravitational waves are ripples in space-time. They are caused by the most violent events in the universe, like the fusion of two black holes.

Additionally, Zimmer’s debut North American tour is confirmed for the fall, which includes headlining performances at New York’s Rough Trade, Los Angeles, Moroccan Lounge, D.C.’s Union Stage, Boston’sGreat Scott, Chicago’s Eastroom and more. See below for complete tour details.

They happen million of light years away, yet are smaller than the size of an atom. It is mind blowing we were able to detect them. Their Nobel prized discovery will allow us to observe the Universe in a way never before possible.

We had the unique chance to be able to shoot inside Virgo, the European Gravitational Waves observatory, located in Pisa, Italy. Every we shot is real, I wanted to show this incredible machine that’s huge but very precise at the same time.”

With his tropical twist on house and disco, Zimmer’s made his name largely as a remixer working for artists including Wunder Wunder,Brooke FraserMoullinexGallant,
Vallis Apls and Moon Boots.
