Exclusive Interview With Australian DJ/Producer M4SONIC

M4SONIC

M4SONIC, known personally as Nick Boundy, is an Australian electronic music producer who was previously signed with major record label Ultra Music (a subsidiary of Sony). Since bursting onto the scene in 2012 off the back of a successful self-made YouTube video for his track ‘Weapon’, M4SONIC has seen wild success in the electronic genre. After fulfilling his obligations with Ultra, he took his career into his own hands and started independent electronic label Global League, where he now releases all his new music.

Inspired by artists like Kaskade, M4SONIC has produced a number of hit tracks, racking up over 2 million Spotify plays.

Throughout his impressive career, M4SONIC has toured extensively across the globe, played major festivals including Warped Tour, Tomorrowland and Stereosonic. M4SONIC has also co-produced songs like the viral 2013 sensation “The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?)”.

But actions speak louder than words, and with over 500,000 Facebook fans and more than 90 million plays on Youtube, it’s clear that M4SONIC is a force to be reckoned with.

The amalgamation of his creative energy and his technical knowledge from over a decade of classical music training has given M4SONIC an edge in the crowded electronic music scene. From gaming soundtracks to pop music, M4SONIC has mastered it all.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Tell us about that first track that put you on the map in the electronic scene and the journey since.

The track was a Launchpad performance called ‘Weapon’ back in 2013

Basically this was an experiment where I pushed myself to film a musical performance of live sampling on a Novation Launchpad to create an original composition in one take. Sceptics didn’t believe it, Reddit forums went crazy arguing over the authenticity of it, music blogs supported and shared the video until it reached a million views in just one week on YouTube. Having only a handful of YouTube subscribers at the time this was a ridiculously exciting thing to happen as I watched the views grow by tens of thousands every hour. This lead to a lot of media attention and the likes of artist managers, producers, record labels and touring agencies all reaching out to jump on the heat as the video became increasingly viral. The journey since has been a story of exploiting that unique skill set using the launchpad as a way to get shows at musical festivals and clubs around the world, a record, management and publishing deal.

Your latest track ‘Stay’ feat. MYLKI dropped recently, tell us about the track and how this collab came about?

MYLKI was visiting my hometown and we connected at my studio to hangout but ended up working on several projects. What was meant to be a single trip turned into several back and forward interstate trips for MYLKI. ‘Stay’ was recorded on the final day in Adelaide before MYLKI returned home to Melbourne. What really interested me in MYLKI’s work was that she was from a punk rock background. Her experience with working with bands and live performances brought an attitude that was unlike anything or anyone I had previously worked with. The original idea was a simple chord progression with a house style pluck. MYLKI listened to this loop and wrote the entire story and melodies within a few hours. We tracked a demo version and I spent the next few days building the project around her vocal.

From MYLKI: “Stay is about a journey of discovery and adventure in life, looking both within yourself and out. It’s about travelling on a journey towards your truth and being accountable for your actions. Stay represents the beauty that lies in relationships, whether that be family, friends, strangers and importantly life itself. Essentially Stay is a song about hope and not fighting against the current, but surrendering to the flow of the universe and what “is”. “Stay with me, until forever is mine and yours” is about being one with the universe and creating peace through your relationship with it.  and the lyrics “Alive with me you’ll see the colours of the air and we’ll start to breathe” Is the universe saying “come with me, release, celebrate life, there is so much beauty here”.”

What single night out has been the most memorable for you all as a DJ and Producer?

My most memorable night out was the first time I saw Skrillex and deadmau5 play at Planet Cream in 2012. Pretty sure that night I decided to chase this dream. Then two years later my most memorable night as a DJ/Producer was standing in front of 10,000 people playing a festival in El Paso. I was playing after MORTEN and just before Chris Lake. Big crowd, huge energy, massive stage and my old man (father) was backstage having travelled from Australia to witness the moment.

Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?

Deadmau5 & Kaskade – I Remember
Somehow, after seriously thrashing this song I still enjoy listening everytime.

How do you get a track started? Tell us a bit about your production process. How long does it take you to complete a track on average, do you ever get writer’s block and who has been your favourite co-lab?

I just jam out on a keyboard or with my friends in the studio. When it comes to writers block I’m either highly motivated or I’m a potato. When I’m feeling flat (usually due to lack of sleep / gym / nutrition) I just ride the wave until I’m in a better frame of mind. Turns out I can’t conform to 9-5 business hours, so I just work all the time until I burn out. Stop, repeat. Couldn’t name a favourite collaborator as fortunately those who I’ve worked with of late just seem to get my vibe and we work so well together it’s a joy.

Latest track / EP? What are you working on currently? Tell us more!

I’ve just completed an intense 12 month studio period where I collaborated with 20+ artists as collaborators and in writing music for their projects as a ghost producer. Have also had some international shows and am now in the planning phase to release all this music I’ve completed and tour for the remaining half of the year.

The relationship between the audience and the DJ is crucial, and yet it seems to be a fragile one – how do you see the balance between giving the crowd what they want and treating them to something new?

It’s really important to give familiarity to your song selection but also keep the crowd guessing what comes next. Everyone enjoys a ‘sing along’ and a ‘huge drop’ but you have to pick your timings of when and how often to use it. The best in the game know how to please a crowd and it takes a lot of experience. Engaging a crowd can make or break a set. If you build hype and deliver then they can judge what’s coming by your interactions and body language. You’re there not to just ‘hit play’ but entertain and spur on the enjoyment of the audience. The task is to have 20% more fun than the crowd and they will surely follow along.
