Hi CRÈME, thanks for taking the time to chat with us!
- Tell us about that first track that put CRÈME on the map in the Music scene and the journey since
“CRÈME began as a reinvention I felt compelled to make in an effort to come out from the shadows I had been hiding in. The first track I released as CRÈME was “Helium” almost 2 years ago. It’s a downtempo sort of indie-rocked out mashup of styles featuring my vocal recorded in a crude and experimental way. But there’s a sort of truthful urgancy to the song which I think attracted listeners. “Helium” got some good blog coverage and I began to see some artists I really respect comment and like it on my socials, so I felt encouraged. After that I released a succession of tracks, experimenting with style and technique. I’m always chasing new elements of production I want to master. The journey is still just beginning as far as I’m concerned. It’s been a slow burn so far, especially since I’m an indie artist right now and haven’t experienced a legitimate or rapidly explosive “hit” yet, but I feel like I’ve got something to prove and I’ve been encouraged by the growing reaction so far.”
- Your latest track “Memories” has just dropped, tell us about the track and the inspiration for it?
“The passage of time has never been easy for me to accept, but loosing a loved one makes it almost unbearble. Over the past year or so I’ve written quite a few songs about it from various perspectrives and “Memories” is the most meloncholic of them. I wanted to juxtapose the sweet almost trance like production in the first verse with the wide bass and agressive brass elemets in the drop to mirror the emotional landscape in my mind. I didn’t want the track to be overly repetitious, because every memory is so different. The second verse section introduces completely new vocal phrasing, the bass is wide open and I brought in a new serum melody. No two sections of the track repeat exactly and new elements are introduced in each section as the track progresses.”
- What single night out has been the most memorable for you as an Artist?
“Damn, how can I answer that? I’m sorry but there are just way too many memories to compare! There were quite a few nights, in an earlier incarnation, when we played large venues and festivals….just seeing thousands of people singing along, and to quote Alison Wonderland that “fucked me up on a spiritual level”.
- Which Producer have you dreamt of collaborating with?
“I’ve drempt of collabs with Skrillex, Flume, Ekali, Snavs and Slushii to name just a few, but I’m prepared to keep dreamin for a while about those guys. I’m extremely happy that I’ve been able to work with Patrick Reza mixing and mastering “Memories”. I absolutely love what he does and I’m very grateful to be able to work with him.”
- Give us the name of one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you listen to it?
“Roses” by The Chainsmokers
- Are there any Tours / residencies / upcoming events that you’re super excited about?
“I’ve wanted to build up my catalog before going out for live dates so please stay tuned, those announcements are coming soon”.
- Tell us one thing weird the world doesn’t know about CRÈME?
“I’m not sure how weird / geekish this is and some people might already know this, but I wrote and sang “Shadow Games” from the Yugioh Movie and recently I came to find out that Slushii is a Yugioh master, so there! Who else out there loves Yugioh?”
- How do you get a track started? Tell us a bit about your production process.
“For me making music is all about the zone of improvisation. Like playing a game or solving a puzzle. I’ll sit down at my keyboard and find a resonant chord progression or I could see something on the street that causes words to flow through my head and record them on my phone. Those words or even hearing a sentence or two from someone else become seeds of a song. Or sometimes I have a simple bassline and beat set up, maybe inspired by another track and I start singing over it, improvising and if I’m really lucky the song will come out, words and melody, in one or two takes. I love when that happens. That’s how “Helium” and “Memories” came to me, pretty much in a single vocal pass. But then I have to work on the production and tweak the tracks for months sometimes to get them right.”
- What is your Spirit Animal?
“I’m a Sagittarius, so maybe a unicorn?”
- Fan question – “Favourite Movie and Actor?”
“I know it’s an old one, but I love it so much – “Blade Runner” is my fave flick of all time.
So in keeping with that, I’ll give Rutger Hauer from Blade Runner my vote for favorite actor.”
